Grutronic bring many different influences to the music, contemporary classical, free jazz, improvisation, funk and abstract electronica. In their gigs they normally perform as a quartet and often also invite an acoustic guest soloist to make a quintet. The guest can attempt to penetrate the Grutronic world of slippery bendy electronic improvisation, or they can choose to take the music where they want and the band will try to support their vision. In the past Grutronic have done this with Evan Parker, shakuhachi master Clive Bell, Orphy Robinson, Paddy Steer (Homelife), Alice Kemp and others. They are thrown in at the deepend and there are no rules, just question marks and music which needs to be played. They rely on listening, feeling, improvisation and on their faith in the moment, and importantly, on their faith in the audience to travel with them. Richard Scott originated as a saxophonist but today plays instruments such as the Buchla lightning, an unusual infra-red instrument which looks like two conductors batons and which translates arm and hand movements into midi signals which he uses used to control a battery of analgue and digital synthesisers, sampler and sound processors.
All the electronic instruments he plays are very physical in use and offer an immediate and detailed level of control over sound making machinery. He is very interested in re-establishing that endangered link between music and the body, this is evident in his own work and in his absorption in improvisation in dance and theatre. Stephen Grew has been playing piano and keyboards (Nord keyboard, piano samples, Rhodes, Wurlitzer and effects) for twenty years and performing intensively for twelve years. Grew began his creative life as a painter and potter. He is self-taught and works with his own unique patterns, sounds and motifs born out of years of solely improvising. He works in many different settings from, film, dance, poetry and works with some of the leading improvisers of the day, Evan Parker, Keith Tippett, Howard Riley, Pat Thomas, Mick Beck and Phillip Marks to name a few. He also has many years performing nationally and internationally, and organising events dedicated to profiling improvisation in his hometown Lancaster, (New Music North West) Nicholas Grew has a classical training in music composition, studying orchestration and composition at the University of Toronto (1993 - 98).
He also explored the medium of electro-acoustic music, composing a SOCAN Young Composer's Award winning piece, "Deaths and Entrances", featuring the voice of Dylan Thomas (1996). His continued interest in electronic music brought him into the realms of pop and alternative rock music as a songwriter, co - producer and member of New York-based Ballistic Cabaret (1997-99) and Newvacuum in Berlin (2000 - 03). For the last two years he has composed music and soundscapes primarily for theatre and is also an active member of improvised electronic music groups: Grutronic and Heavenlycopter, in which he explores the use of live sound processing with electronic toys. He now resides in Devon and continues to work as a Theatre Composer, Improviser, Teacher and a Youth Performing Arts Programme Developer.
Dave Ross has been performing and recording for twenty years. He has played and recorded with Matt Deighton, Clive Bell, Kenny Process Team, Bark Psychosis, Eugene Chadbourne, Jah Wobble and Kev Hopper, to name a few. David has developed a performing system made up of handsonic, Moog analogue electronics, thumb piano, and small electronic instruments. He has produced a CD with Clive Bell on The Metier label.
