Grub Brother

Grub Brother's music, which is a mixture of field recordings, synths and audio effects, is produced as a one-man-project, enhanced only by a mic for environmental research, an electric piano for melody playing and a MIDI-controller for control. Grub Brother's music, which is a mixture of field recordings, synths and audio effects, is produced as a one-man-project, enhanced only by a mic for environmental research, an electric piano for melody playing and a MIDI-controller for control. His music can be considered as modern fairy tales or sometimes only still pictures of a scenery or a short event, as surreal accounts of more or less simple impressions. He claims the his music is at least intended to give a dreamlike feeling. Thus Grub Brother counts late romanticists, especially Satie, Debussy and Rachmaninoff among his musical influences, as well as various modern jazz bands and different kinds of contemporary electronic music such as the soundscapes of David Velez and Eric Cook.

In contrast to them, Grub Brother tries to produce more figurative and less abstract music. Biography: Jan Zombik a.k.a. Grub Brother was born in Germany, 1988, and first confronted with music when he was about 4 years old - they called it musical pre-education. He's been taken there two times a week, and they kind of tried to musify him and his poor fellow sufferers ... Obviously they finally had succeeded when they asked him at an age oft 6, before Jan should enter primary school, to draw the instrument he most liked so far - he drew a piano.

He didn't do this because of any personal affinity towards the piano and its sound, he was merely impressed of its size and the noise it could produce: It was definitely the biggest instrument he knew so far. At least he wasn't totally fucked up by his "educators". After this little prelude, his parents decided on the basis of the infamous piano drawing, that he liked to play the piano and got little Jan a piano teacher. Although the first one failed at him and his tendency to hyperactively bounce around during lessons, the second one was really kind and he took his teachings. A piano was bought, and he practiced about half an hour, sometimes one hour a day.

Not much, as any professional musician knows. He more or less went on this way for a period of almost 13 years, sometimes interrupted by periods of higher musical activity in order to achieve some wins at the German youth music contest "Jugend musiziert". Three times he succeeded, one time almost reaching the federal level of the contest. But despite the contesting, the practicing and so on he always considered playing the piano as a free time activity, not as his destiny. After having finished high school (or more the German equivalent to high school), in which big band he used to play, his decision was clear not to study music, but physics and philosophy.

Anyway he didn't want to give up music at all and bought a good midi-keyboard, a production software, a MIDI-Controller and started working. As he thinks, the result does at least not scare any listeners away, and that's why this account was created. Website: Grub Brother's website can be actually found at grubbrother.church-of-ape.org and will be shortly available at grubbrother.com. Anyhow, the site is still under construction. Note: Please consider this as a basis for any biographical information. Because there isn't anybody out there who could know my music (I just created this account), I have tried to give a short summary of my musical "career".

Btw: The beautiful monkey appearing to be "me" was made by a dear friend of mine and is called Ohuruhu. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
