Green Smatroll

The band got together in 2002. At the begining it was more jam-session, than a real band. But at the end of the year, the band finalized its line-up: keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, trumpete, tenor-saxophone and alt-saxophone, and chose to play ska. The band got together in 2002. At the begining it was more jam-session, than a real band. But at the end of the year, the band finalized its line-up: keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, trumpete, tenor-saxophone and alt-saxophone, and chose to play ska. After first couple gigs in Prague, the band started to play outside the capital city, and started to travel all over the Czech republic. During their short career, they stood on stage with ska-giants, such as New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, The Slackers, Los Granadians, Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation, Mr.

T-bone All Star Band, Yellow Umbrella, Skalariak, Irié Revoltés and many others. Green Sma*troll are also each year members of festivals such as Skankin Pragga, Mighty Sounds, Reggae Ethnic Session, Unite Fest etc. In 2003 the band recorded their first album Green Perception, where are songs from the very begining of the group, but also couple of brand new tracks. Many influences are heard on this album...The Skatalites, Yellow Umbrella, Babylon Circus, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. The group didn’t stayed just in traditional Ska&Reggae mellodies, but works also with balcan, arabian, or klezmer music motives. In February 2005 band added trombone to their line-up and in 2006 recorded second album So This Night, which has shown brass section’s great skills in jazzy mellodies.

Album includes 9 regular tracks + 1 cover version of Skatalites „Skamania“. The album challenged very good in many reviews in music magazines. In December 2006 an article about the group and short interview in music magazine Filter was released. Green Sma*troll continues to tour over the country and made its first couple gigs abroad: Poland, Germany, Slovakia etc.

They’ve won a „Young groups contest“ at music festival in Oelsnitz, Germany. The group adds second trombone (bass-trombone) and made couple member-changes, which kicked the band to a very different and higher level. In January 2008 Green Sma*troll was backing Roy Ellis aka Mr. Symarip and did a wonderful concert together during the Winter Subculture festival at Prague. These days the band is preparing tours abroad and collecting material for their third album.
