He was motivated by these two that he one day bought a bass and with the little guitar skills he knew he used it to join Eddie and David in their strive to create a band. They kept playing and covered multiple songs from the Deathmetal Hardcore scene, mainly inspired from the old sounds of a band called Underoath but felt they needed a complete band to reach a similar sound. Another close friend of theirs (Anthony Manzella) watched the soon to be bands every chance they had to practice with each other. He also soon got into a similar taste of the music, mainly into the sound of the piano and keyboard behind the heavy and fast paced riffs.
Trading in what he had, to get a keyboard he learned quickly and they all collaborated well. Now missing from their creation was a second guitar player and vocalist to go along with them. David heard of a guitarist that attended the same school as them (Bryan Perez) and after listening to their sounds he joined quickly wanting to be apart of the music. Continuing to cover songs from the band Underoath and beginning to make songs of their own anxious as they were they could not play anywhere with out a vocalist.
Lots of their friends enjoyed the music they created and helped them in their search for a vocalist. In late 2005 the group went through many screamers for their band and they soon found one who matched perfect, Joey Almaraz from a different school who recently learned a vocal style that was somewhat new to him which was also influenced based upon the old sounds of Underoath and more of the Metalcore genre. Soon the band found out more about him and began to realize Joey’s true passion was in high school wrestling which he also wanted to take beyond high school. He soon departed to continue his first dream in wrestling.
The band kept going but it didn’t feel the same after once being complete and then losing an important member that made them a whole. Months past until Joey realized the band meant something to him. He gave up wrestling to go back to what he now loved doing, which was making music and sharing the stage with his new closest friends. Joey wanted to be part of the band because he felt it had potential to be something and go somewhere with what the group did.
Soon they all sat around to come up with a name for their band. The name “Graven Images” came up because the Bible quotes “Thou Shalt Not Worship Any Graven Image” and they felt that there were many graven images (false idols) in our world and in reality we all can be one and they shouldn’t be looked upon as anything greater. So the now Graven Images continued strong with the exception of Bryan, being the oldest in the group he took to much control and in early 2006 left the band due to feelings of the rest of the band holding him back. Yet Graven Images continued and as soon as Bryan left the band they started to make new material and also create side projects as Jesus and Anthony discovered a distinct screaming style of their own.
One of the side projects that soon became well known in the local area had a fan (Ian Simms) that did all their designs. They soon found out that Ian was a young but yet talented guitarist. They instantly decided to add him as part of Graven Images. In the mid 2006 Ian met up with them about joining the band and he was already familiar with their songs.
He fit in more then well and once again their sounds collaborated to bring a new sound to the local area with addition of the new member Ian and the newly found screaming and guttural screams of Anthony and Jesus as background vocals. This brought Graven Images back stronger then they ever were and they continued to increase in popularity through out areas making a name for them and doing things their own way. Now inspired by their own dreams little by little becoming reality Graven Images goes about more excited day by day bringing one of the most intense stage performances seen. This was now the true Graven Images and shall it remain.
From the dreams of six kids with their own sad stories they come together to relate through their music to reach not only the goal of making it to the top but also to present the feelings within them and saw no other way but through their love in music. "We are a seven piece band from California. We play fast enough you think we where from Africa we play slow enough you would think we were fat and overweight, HEAVY, yet so soft(like a big brown bear). We love music, we love to play, and we love to put on a show.
In the years we been a band,1 broken jaw,1 split head,5 cracked teeth, 1 tooth knocked out,and countless cramps. And we loved every moment of it. We would love to play at your bar mitzvah, party, venue, company picnic, ozzfest, warped tour, quinceanera, or any other place you would like to see us jump around and make loud noises."
