Village Thing was founded by Gef Lucena, Ian A. Anderson and John Turner. Lucena was already running a local indie label, Saydisc, which had already gained a reputation for publishing low-run pressings by local folk/comedy artists including Fred Wedlock; Saydisc was the "parent" company and continues to trade today. Formed in 1965 by Gef Lucena, Saydisc became a renowned family-run label specializing in folk and traditional music of Britain, traditional music from around the world, recordings of unusual instruments and other esoteric genres such as British music hall recordings and the sounds of Victorian and Edwardian mechanical music devices. Gef Lucena wound operations down in 2001 and decided to halt further CD album releases.

Since then the business has carried on as an internet-only enterprise dealing with licensing and distribution of music materials. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
