It all began as a humble three-song demo. For Gavin Goszka, best known for his work in the Halloween horror soundtrack outfit Midnight Syndicate, it was simply a way to start booking gigs. "We were heading into a bit of a break with Syndicate and I really wanted to start playing out again. I had been doing solo acoustic performances in the mid-to-late 90's and absolutely loved it." While choosing material to include on what was intended to be a simple, acoustic demo, Gavin realized that the Victorian period had yielded some true gems of songwriting, the vast majority of which hadn't graced the ears of listeners in over 100 years. "I was finding a lot of really memorable material - songs with hooky melodies and interesting progressions. Despite the fact that many of the lyrics tended to come off as being a bit dated, I felt that they definitely deserved being heard by a modern audience." Realizing that taking a 'purist' stance on recording - attempting to recreate the way the songs would have sounded originally, with period instrumentation - would probably leave many of today's listeners cold, he decided to blend the old with the new and approach the songs from the perspective of a folk-rock ensemble. "A lot of this music was originally performed with very sparse accompaniment - just a piano and a vocalist in most cases.

People would gather around the family piano or organ in the evenings and pass the time singing and playing. I felt that an album done this way would fall a little flat on today's listeners, especially since production is such a huge part of what's played and popular. But at the same time, I didn't want to completely lose sight of where the songs came from." The result is a unique and intriguing blend of styles that is sure to delight and surprise.
