Garrett decided to play bass because he was inspired by his brother, who also played an instrument. While in high school, Garrett enjoyed listening to the band Savage Garden.

During High School Garrett was a quiet student and didn't talk a whole lot. Garrett was in several bands throughout high school, eventually he got tired of jumping from band to band and wanted to find a band that was serious about music as much as he was. In 2007 Garrett joined the band The Maine. His band members were drummer Pat Kirch, Ryan Osterman, Alex Ross, bassist Garrett Nickelsen, and singer John O'Callaghan.

In Spring of 2007 Kennedy Brock was added to the band. Later, Ryan and Alex left the band and Jared Monaco joined. They signed to Fearless Records in late 2007, and released The Way We Talk on December 11, 2007.The record hit #45 on the U.S. Billboard Top Independent Albums chart and #10 on the Heatseekers chart in 2008.

The band self-released an EP called "Stay Up, Get Down" on May 8, 2007. Among the songs on the EP are "Count 'Em One Two Three," "Daisy," "Shake It!," "Give Me Anything (Digital)," and "The Town's Been Talkin." "Count 'Em One Two Three" is on their cd "Can't Stop Won't Stop", and "The Town's Been Talkin" is on their EP "The Way We Talk". "The Way We Talk EP" was their second EP. They recorded a cover of Akon's hit song, "I Wanna Love You", for release on the "Punk Goes Crunk" album and is also on their EP. "Can't Stop Won't Stop" was their first full length album which was released in the summer of 2008. The Maine spent the summer opening on the Soundtrack of Your Summer tour, alongside Boys Like Girls, Good Charlotte, and Metro Station. They spent two weeks performing on the Vans Warped Tour 2008 on the Smartpunk stage.

In the fall of 2008, The Maine continued the tour madness by pairing with All Time Low, Mayday Parade, and Every Avenue in the "The Compromising of Integrity, Morality and Principles in Exchange for Money" tour. In February and March of 2009, The Maine is tour with We The Kings, The Cab, There For Tomorrow, and Versa Emerge on "The Secret Valentine Tour." Later in March, they will also on the AP Tour 2009 along with 3OH!3, Family Force 5, Hit the Lights, and A Rocket to the Moon. They have been confirmed for the 2009 Vans Warped Tour. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Random Facts: -Garrett's favorite show is The Office and his favorite movie is Fight Club. -Garrett's biggest pet peeves are talking close to his face and looking over his shoulder when he types. -Garret's message he would like to leave with the world is: "Life isnt' all that bad and no matter what happens, there's always something good and you find that somehow. "Everything I Ask For," their first music video, debuted on November 13, 2008 on MTVU. The song is played throughout the trailer to Lindsay Lohan's featured film Labor Pains, used in Making The Band Season 4, and in a commercial for Fearless Records on the TV channel called the N. In addition, MTV has played a number of their songs on The Hills and Bromance. A year after The Maine was named one of the "100 Bands You Need to Know in 2008" by the Alternative Press, they will grace the cover of the same magazine for the April issue, which will be in stores March 3, 2009.
