Garifulla Kurmangaliev (Russian: Гарифулла Курмангалиев, Kazakh: Ғарифолла Құрманғалиев, 1909-1993) from Ural Region, West Kazakhstan, was a well-known opera singer and performer of traditional folk songs, and People's artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He was a unique phenomenon in the Kazakh musical culture of the 20th century, as for many decades he was the only performer representing and maintaining the ancient and sophisticated musical performance art of Western Kazakhstan. He preserved the cultural legacy of Mukhit, the most important Kazakh singer of the 19th Century. Kurmangaliev sung in various styles of the Western Kazakh Region, in particular the Atyrau Style, Mangistau Style and Aktobe Style.

During his time in opera (1934 - 1966) he performed 20 leading roles. His expressive voice and actor's skills helped him to create the unique images of the main heroes depicted in the Kazakh national operas, such as: Shege Akyn, i.e. one of the most popular steppe troubadours in Kyz Zhibek, Batyr Sakan (Combat Hero) and Zhyrau (Steppe Troubadour) role in Yer-Targyn, Yestay in Birzhan and Sara Opera, Mullah in Dudarai and Narubmet in Abay. Also, he contributed to the arrangement and performances of such operas written by foreign authors, such as Daisi (Tito's role), Nergis (Latif's role) and Eugeniy Onegin (Trike's role).

Kurmangaliev's role in the production of the first Kazakh opera based on the folk materials has become invaluable. Besides being a prominent performer, opera singer and composer of songs and poems, he was a film actor, folk collector and teacher. Read more on Last.fm.
