Furahakören (="Furaha choir") is the Finnish Mission Society's (Finska Missionssällskapet/Suomen Läheysseura) swedishspeaking choir. The active choir consists of about 30 young adults, but there are many more old members, the so called Furaha-friends. Furahakören was founded 1973 by Gunvor Helander and has ever since then had the same goal: to spread the joy of the gospel through songs from many different countries. The choir gathers once a month to practise and perform in two or three parishs in the diocese of Porvoo (the swedishspeaking diocese in the Finnish Lutheran church).

This makes it possible to be an active member of the choir wether you live in the north or the south of Finland. The word Furaha comes from the language Swahili, which is spoken in the eastern parts of Africa, and means joy. Through their songs Furahakören wants to spread the joy and concurrently inspire to mission. The songs sung by the Furaha choir come from all over the world; mostly from Africa but there are also songs from Latin America, Asia and Europe. The choir sings in many different languages (swedish, finnish, english, swahili, zulu, spanish, ndebele, ndonga and chinese just to mention a few) to bring the whole world closer and thus give the listeners a glimpse of the missionary work. Mostly the songs are accompanied only by african drums and maracases (or similar rhytmic instruments).
