Fringe has been around since mid-2008 playing gigs around Edmonton and silently writing. In May 2011, the band invested in recording equipment and started tracking the same summer. The process of tracking and editing dragged on through the winter months accompanied by two busy semesters of school and finally entered mixing phase in March of 2012. Several pleasant evenings spent in the company of beer, friends, and local sound engineer Nick Boadway at his home studio Spin This Recording concluded in June with a finished mix.
Now, back from Isaac McFaul at Soundscape Studios, the mastered version of Shock of Life is available for free streaming. In the spirit of Do It Yourself, Fringe is about experimentation and self-sufficiency. Cooking tracks in a dingy basement and mixing it in yet another, the tracks on the debut album Shock of Life are a product of raw, music-driven determination. In addition to being an enjoyable piece of work, the album stands as further proof that access to affordable technology is resulting in a major tectonic shift in the music industry that is slowly favouring the independent artist. And it is precisely this niche that Fringe hopes to operate from, delivering music that is raw and from the heart - written, recorded, and mixed with care. 3.
