In 1978 he met Jean-Paul Celea, with whom he became very close and has played a lot. After 1978 he has played and performed with Daniel Humair, François Jeanneau, Michel Portal et Didier Lockwood. Couturier was granted the Django Reinhardt-price by the 'Académie du Jazz' in 1980. Thereafter, he continued to play in different formations, including the Couturier-Celea Quintet, the Black Moon-quintet and the group 'Passagio', amongst others.
Couturier is also a member of the Anouar Brahem Trio. He has recently released an album under his own name, 'Nostalghia - Song for Tarkovsky' (ECM, 2006), which is dedicated to and inspired by the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.
