Fluxus is one of the young Flemish bands which has brought new life into folk music in Flanders. Fluxus means both ‘fluid’ and ‘moving’ and that is exactly what the band and its six members is all about! PINGOEROE Fluxus was established in the mid nineties in the Garriau household: father Paul, his children Greet and Koen, together with some musician friends, build up their own repertoire and soon become well known through the annual folk music workshop in Gooik. The release of their first cd “Pingoeroe” (wbm ’98) coincides with the arrival of a genuine folk boom and turns out to be a direct hit. Before long, Fluxus gains a steady live reputation both at home and abroad. “One can discern certain elements of French and Anglo-Saxon folk, of the Galician instrumental music of Carlos Nuñez and even a touch of Jan Garbarek.
However, the sound of the band is mainly determined by traditional instruments such as accordion, shawm, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy.” (G. De Mol, De Morgen, 18 February ’99) N.O.E. A few years later “N.O.E.” (Zoku/EMI ’00) was issued. This album features the band’s first lyrics. Next to the energetic, instrumental compositions for which the band is famous, there is now also room for more intimate work.
The addition of fretless bass and percussion results both in a stronger band and a stronger sound that will become even more apparent in their more recent compositions. TRANSPARANT The latest cd “Transparant” (Ha’ Records ’03), recorded under the direction of Fritz Sundermann, is the synthesis of Fluxus’ experience and their capacities. The cd contains a richness of tradition, the poetry of intimacy and the impact of modern, industrial times. VOICE Greet’s voice has developed, the songs are stronger. With their new cd, Fluxus is determined to reconcile tradition and future and this through a great variety of musical styles. But their aim remains the same: To make you move! 2.
