Extra Fancy

Shamefully overlooked alternative band from the mid 90's. Featuring openly gay vocalist Brian Grillo, who also pounded on a 50 gallon oil drum, the band was rounded out by bassist, D. A. Foster, guitarist Michael Hateley, and drummer Derek O'Brien. Their sound was a mix of alternative, punk, and rockabilly, with lyrics tackling sexuality, sex and gender roles, abuse, life on the streets as a gay youth, and HIV.

While heavy and angry, with an underlying fierce sexiness, lyrics were intelligent, honest, and thought provoking. The band released their first single, "You Look Like A Moviestar, Honey" to a bit of controversy, due to it's cover photo of John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever pose doctored to feature a large penis. Their album, "Sinnerman" was released in May of 1996 to good reviews, but the band were dropped by their label, Atlantic Records after a short 8 weeks.

Hateley departed in 1997, and the band, after releasing the "No Mercy" EP called it quits in December of that same year. Though still relatively underground, "Sinnerman" and Extra Fancy are still well regarded musically, as well as pioneers in the queer rock world. Read more on Last.fm.
