"I got into a lot of trouble when I lived in New Jersey, but my mom always straightened me out with a broomstick." He did manage, however, to discover his love for music in New Jersey when he saw a friend of his that was known for being a great dancer "pop-swallow" somebody's heart. "It was awesome. I'd never seen anything like it before. That's when I really started to get into music." His unfriendly attitude seemed to change when a respected teacher said to him, "You can stand up for yourself, but can you stand up for anybody else?" Corvus says that it completely changed his perspective on how he treated people. At the age of 14, Corvus moved to a small town in Pennsylvania.
He says that it was his biggest culture shock. "It was weird having everything around in the city, and [then] moving to a place where your next door neighbor was a bear." "In PA is where I had the most fun though", says Corvus. He enjoyed riding on quads and dirtbikes, but his biggest passion was racing and working on cars. Pennsylvania is also where he managed to discover that he wanted to become a singer for a living.
He describes playing in a high school battle of the bands and when the audience was moved by the performance, that's when he knew. After high school, Corvus left for a music academy in Colombia where he met his greatest influence, "the prophet" or "el profeta", as he was known. He has many interesting stories from living in Colombia, from spending a night in jail for playing a gig too late to interesting stories about the women he met there. He says that Colombia was where he gained the most experience playing when he played around local bars in Bogota playing covers. He was screwed by the band's manager out of everything they had, so he quit and went back to America. He had almost given up on his dream completely, but then when he was sought out to sing for the band he said "It was like destiny".
He knew this was his place. He roughed it out for years with Orion including sleeping on the floor for a year. When the band moved to California to record their Album "Sex Metal" it seemed that it was all starting to pay off. Major influences include: Rob Halford, David Coverdale, Sebastian Bach, and James Dean. Orion Rosas From the depths of St.
Louis City and a family of musicians, 22 year old Orion says he's really lived everywhere. By the age of 19 he had spent time in every state of the country...except Hawaii. Born in Alaska, at 2 years old he was living in Nashville, TN. "That part of my life was an interesting start.
We weren't allowed to watch TV without the family being together, and they didn't like to watch TV. My parents didn't by me toys unless it was my birthday or Christmas, which isn't bad at all, it tought me to learn how to make money myself if I wanted something. I didn't have a video game console either, so my brother Shane and I would make up games to keep each other entertained or I would try to make inventions and sell them to people door to door in a neighborhood a couple miles away. I always managed to stay busy though." At the age of 9 he moved to the city of St.
Louis, Missouri where he experienced a culture shock. "I don't want to go into details, but it was definitely a lot different living in the city where I was a major minority than living in the country where I never thought about skin color." As usual he accomodated to living in the city and adapted to the culture, but when he moved at 14 years old, he entered the biggest culture shock of all...the suburbs. "I got into a lot of trouble when I first moved to the suburbs. I was essentially coming from an extremely violent and morally bankrupt urban environment to a Beaver Cleaver, dad mowing the lawn on Saturday mornings with the local high school football game in the afternoon type of suburb. I hated it." At first...but after his 3rd friend was murdered in St.
Louis, at the age of 15 he decided to drop his old ways and form a new path. He stopped making "beats" as he had been for the last 5 years and picked up the guitar. "I was intrigued by that instrument more than anything else in my life. I'd been writing full arrangements of music with all kinds of instruments since I was 6 years old (starting with a song for a crush in 1st grade), but never thought of the guitar until then." Having played piano, saxaphone, trumpet, and having university credits in jazz by the age of 11, Orion truly has had a lifetime of musical experience. At 17 he started his business, Orion Custom, where he manufactured "boutique" wah pedals and modified guitar effects pedals.
When he became a full-time college student (double major) this seemed to be an overbearing task and he eventually dropped out of college...not to pursue his business but to begin his dream of playing guitar for a living. His knowledge of music, guitar, and life experience helped create the crunchy and juicy overtones of the music in Sex Metal. "I feel like I've been given an amazing blessing from God", says Orion, "but I couldn't have done anything without the amazing support and upbringing I've received from my family". Major Influences Include: Smokey Taylor (or Smokey Huff), Randy Hetlage, Steve Vai, Jennifer Batten, Eddie Van Halen, Scott Henderson, George Lynch, Stevey Ray Vaughan, Chuck Shuldiner, Eric Tessmer, Steve DeMartini, Jimi Hendrix, Marty Friedman, and Glen Tipton. Excessive Excessive started off in St. Louis, Missouri in 2006 with the name "Wolf Pack" when Orion Rosas and his fill-in live bass player (Leo) were on the porch smoking a cigarette and looking at the stars and Leo turns to Orion to say, "What if we called it Orion?". The character from ancient mythology stood for everything the alpha male stood for, hence leading to the name Orion.
However upon the release of the demo, "Sex Metal", the name was changed once again to Excessive. Excessive seemed to stand for everything the band represented. As the only original member, Orion worked for almost a year alone until he found a singer in New Jersey (Corvus), drummer in Cincinati, and bass player in Milwaukee. After the first year the drummer and bass player decided to pursue different careers in life (army for the drummer and office worker in Florida for the Bass Player). Corvus and Orion went on pursuing their dream overbearing numerous tasks and adventures that can only be told in a book.
From St. Petersburg, FL to San Diego, CA to Tijuana, BC, Mexico to Los Angeles, CA, the pair vowed that they would never give up. They finally finished their first demo, "Sex Metal", over 2 months independently in Tijuana a year after the pair united. Which is where it all seemed to begin for the young duo...
