Evan H Chen spent several years as one of the in-house composers at What The Hale Music in Chicago. In that capacity, Evan created music for specific clients on a per-job basis, as well as contributing to music "libraries" leased to studios, television stations, and radio stations. But after eleven years in Chicago, he struck westward and moved to Los Angeles. Evan first met with larger audience when making the soundtrack to J Michael Strasczynski's "Crusade", a spinoff from the popular "Babylon 5" tv-series. Unfortunately the series was cancelled before gaining momentum and Evan's participation may not have gained the popular eye as it otherwise might have. His music was unorthodox for the kind of series he composed for, and the competition with very popular former and later reassigned composer Christopher Franke (Tangerine Dream) might have added to the difficulties of gaining broader acceptance.

But Evan knew of this danger and proved uncompromising, following the advice of producers Copeland and Straczynski to not do what had been done before. Evan's unorthodox approach results in a slight queerness to the sound, a mystical eastern soundscape, more ambient than thematic and very difficult to get caught by. You won't often hear someone humming the theme, and probably wouldn't recognize it if someone did. Also the compositions compiled for the sparce "soundtrack" of Crusade didn't present Evan in a focused way, but rather emphasized the diversity and perhaps extreme eclectism in his composing, rather than focusing on his storytelling.
