Ethereal Counterbalance

ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE is (and always was) a vehicle for the psychedelic musical experiments of ROD GOODWAY. Begun in 1988, the debut album was recorded in its entirety by Goodway ( under the working title "Holy Smoke" ) but had various instruments including Sitar, Piano, and full drum kit added in the studio by NICK SALOMAN as it was being Mastered prior to its release on the WORONZOW label ( WOO 12 ) in 1990. It was Saloman's idea to call it "Ethereal Counterbalance" (the name eventually stuck) and it remains a collectors item in this form as this version has only ever been released as a vinyl LP. ( The original "Holy Smoke" version was released in 2002 as a CDr on Goodway's Uncle Glitch label .) The second album, "Ethereal Counterbalance 2" , was eventually fully titled "Mellifluous Confluence" and released on the September Gurls label in Germany ( SGLP 15 and SGCD 11 ) in 1994.

By this time there was a LIVE band featuring Phil (HEADSMITH) Smith on lead guitar and Dan Tilbury (drums), with a succession of bass players, including Tony Orchard and Steve Chew. This line-up dedicated a track called "Let It Fly" to the "SUCCOUR" 2CD 'Terrascope Benefit Album' (POT CD 01 ) The Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine editor PHIL McMULLEN went on to become head-honcho of the renowned TERRASTOCK Festivals in the USA which later included the Ethereal Counterbalance LIVE band in Boston and Seattle. The third release, "Plug", was a 10 inch vinyl mini-LP on the September Gurls label ( 1997 ) but was shared with Norwegian band SMELL OF INCENSE. The ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE side weighs in at over 22 minutes and includes 2 new studio tracks and the debut of "Flight 49" (a future staple of LIVE shows) , recorded at the the Magic Mushroom's Space Ritual Festival in Belgium in 1994. After a period of severe ill health, Goodway was encouraged back onstage by Nick Saloman & Adrian Shaw at the third TERRASTOCK Festival in London (as featured on the "Desert Sands" track included on the 2CD "ACID JAM 2" compilation on the WORONZOW label - WOO 41 ), which proved to be a launch pad for a new approach to the Ethereal Counterbalance LIVE band, featuring a different line-up at each gig, the only staple being ROD GOODWAY and old chum ADRIAN (Hawkwind) SHAW.

Every gig but one also included NICK (Bevis Frond) SALOMAN but other line-ups have also included PAUL (Alchemysts) SIMMONS, ANDY (Camel) WARD, PETE (High Tide) PAVLI, JOHN (Only Ones) PERRY, BRENDAN (Abunai) QUINN, HARRY (Lazily Spun) SUMNALL, MICK (Flyte Reaction) CROSSLEY, MATT LOVE, JON GUARD & KEITH CHRISTMAS.
