Elly and Rikkert got to know each other at the end of the sixties, then they both found oneself in the hippy community, lived in a commune in Drenthe and made music with people as Boudewijn de Groot. In that time they married and they started to perform as a couple. Soon their first album was released (both had already made a solo record earlier). The first duet of Elly and Rikkert was called ‘Vreemde Vogels’ (Strange Birds).

Afterwards they made several songs together. One of their best known numbers from that time are ‘De kauwgomballenboom’ (The Chewing-Gum Ball Tree) from October 1971, a single which reached the so-called tip parade. Also the song ‘Alles is Vrij’ (Everything is Free) from January 1973 did not make it to the top 40. They actually did not aim for the top 40; their aim was to make lovely, pleasant music.

On a day they decided to go in search of the sense of living, they bought an old van with the intention to driv to India, in search of a good guru. Halfaway the travel they converted to Christianity and decided to make it their main objective on carrying out the Christian belief by doing what they loved most: making music. Many albums by Elly and Rikkert followed with the Choir kids Crew form Maarn, ‘Spetters and Friends’ ('Fountainkoren ' formerly ' in the space Choirs') Soest. In 2004 two dvd's were released; one for adults (‘Al die jaren’ (All Those Years) and one for children ‘Een kindercondert met Elly en Rikkert’ (a concert for childs with Elly and Rikkert).
