It is within the Progressive or Art Rock genre where we find "El Retorno de los Brujos”’ main musical influence. This progressive rock trio is made up of Jaime García on guitar and synthesizer, Gabriel Martínez on drums and electronic percussion and Alejandro Ortiz on bass. In the middle of August of 2001, Gabriel Martinez and Jaime García left the group Medusa and invited Alejandro Ortiz, who had left Catrina to join a new project, which was originally entited: “Figuras de Cartón” (“Cardboard Cut-outs”). a name taken from a song by Italian group Le Orme. The said project retained the last song by Medusa entitled Nietzsche Shade.” Under the name of Cardboard Cut-outs, they carried out their first public appearance, taking turns with rock pop group Equilibrio (Balance), obtaining good reviews. A month later, El Retorno de los Brujos (Return of the Warlocks) appeared in El ll Festival de Arquitectura (Architecture Festival ll), which took place at the UAM Plantel Xochimilco, presenting a multi-media show, inspired by the incredible gothic architecture of the middle ages.

Public reviews were very favorable; the video which was presented on this occasion was recorded entirely in Europe in French cathedrals in order to make the band’s environmental concept more natural. The end of October is when El Retorno de Los Brujos (Return of the Warlocks) begins to record their first independent CD in UK studios, which concludes in January, 2002. The CD, which is entitled “Conspiración a la Luz del Día” (“Daylight Robbery”), comprises 9 short instrumentals, composed entirely by the three band members, with the exception of “Breve Estudio para Guitarra” (“Brief study for Guitar)” written by Jaime García. During the cutting of the CD, La Sombra de Nietzsche (Nietzsche Shade), Homenaje (Homage), De Profundis and El Fabricante de Quimeras (Manufacturer of Pipe Dreams) are highlighted, where the influence of 70’s progressive groups like King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Yes, amongst others, is felt very strongly. The title for the CD was taken from one of the French book’s chapters. 'El Retorno de los Brujos’ musical ideas, as we have said, besides falling within the Progressive genre tries to acknowledge generic groups as well as great maestros of contemporary opinion.

For example, La Sombra de Nietzsche (Nietzsche Shade) is a tribute to the German Psychologist and Philosopher of the 19th Century, Frederico Nietzsche. Also, De Profundis, is homage to the excellent English writer Oscar Wilde Homenaje (Homage), El Fabricante de Quimeras (Manufacturer of Pipe Dreams) and Pequeño Milton (Little Milton) are homage to the great progressive groups of the 70’s. At the beginning of 2003, El Retorno de los Brujos is invited by Smogless Records and Grupo Arte Sonoro (Loud Art Group) to take part in a compilation of two CDs where they take turns with another 17 Progressive rock and National Opposition bands amongst which Cast, La Banda Elástica (Elastic Band), Gallina Negra (Black Hen) and Muros de Agua (Water Walls) are highlighted. The said compilation called Ehécatl CE appeared at the end of July of this year, and has been very well received amongst Progressive Rock fans. El Retorno de los Brujos pated with a song entitled “Gargantua”, a composition carried out specifically for this compilation.

This double disc is produced in Mexico by Smogless Records and in France, by the Musea Group. 2005 was a year of promotion both for the first CD as well as the Ehécatl CE compilation. Appearances were carried out in private and public schools, culture centres, private functions and centres like La Planta de Luz. Again 2006 is a year of work for the band and there are new appearances in culture centres and cafés. In the middle of this very year, El Retorno de los Brujos starts recording material for their second album, which concludes in December 2006. The said conceptual album is entitled “La Reforma” (“The Reform”) and on it reference is made to the historical Mexican 5 year period of 1855 to 1860.

This concept is a tribute to the Mexican Liberals of the Reformist Period. Once again, the new material is composed of 9 melodies, which bear the titles of events or important personalities from the La Guerra de los Tres Años (Three Year War), La Batalla de Calpulalpan (the Battle of Calpulalpan), El Benemérito (The Distinguished One), and La Reforma (The Reform), amongst others. 2007 opens the year with three new interviews, the first being on the program Alma de Concreto (Concrete Soul) on Radio UNAM led by Noe Cordero, the second on the Internet station “Arritmia” (Arrhythmia) and the third one on Universal Radio Station in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos on the “Arte Rock” (Rock Art) program. During March 2007 an appearance is made before the media for the “La Reforma” (“The Reform” disc. Actually, El Retorno de los Brujos (Return of the Warlocks) find themselves promoting this second album on radio stations, in schools, culture centres and cafés.

The appearances include a typical theatrical dialogue, which involves two actors narrating the “Dialogue in Hell between Miramón and Comonfort”, with the aid of a music stand. Also El Retorno de los Brujos appear in two newspapers (Reforma of Mexico City and Milenio of Monterrey city, in February and July respectively) In 2008 we continue with "La Reforma" promotion presenting all the show in Hosues of Culture and in Radio Stations. Today we are preparing new material for we hope will be our third CD. This new material will include a 18 minutes suite, inspired in one of Rituals of ancient Mexican Indians Group.
