Derek Bailey, George Lewis, John Zorn

In the early 1980s, three heavyweights of the American avant-garde - Derek Bailey (guitar), John Zorn (saxophone, clarinet, game calls) and George Lewis (trombone) - teamed up to record Yankees, an album of collective improvisation. According to "Blue" Gene Tyranny on allmusic.com, the album is comprised of: "Subtle, droll, hilarious takes on the trivia of baseball sounds: Lewis speaks through the trombone "ball one, ball one...." There are snippets of a slipping and sliding version of "Take Me out to the Ball Game" and so on. Read more on Last.fm

There are snippets of a slipping and sliding version of "Take Me out to the Ball Game" and so on. Sections are titled "City City City," "The Legend of Enos Slaughter," "Who's on First," followed by "On Golden Pond," a tongue-in-cheek tone poem of the flora and fauna and mosquitoes. "The Warning Track" is about a very tiny railroad system." The album was originally released on the Celluloid label in 1983 and has been subsequently rereleased on the Charly label. It is the first recorded meeting of John Zorn and Derek Bailey, who would later collaborate with William Parker for the 1993 album, Harras.

Zorn and Lewis also worked together on News for Lulu (1988) and More News for Lulu (1993) alongside Bill Frisell. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
