Deep Fur

The story of this Deep Fur starts in 2004 when Sam Wilkinson was brought in on drums to complete the line up with Alex Wilkinson (Guitar/Vocals) and The Catman (Bass). There were various short lived versions of Deep Fur before this including one many years previously that had recorded a studio demo (Mother), played several squat gigs and notably the Hammersmith Clarendon Basement. The Catman (a.k.a John Turner), who formed the band with Steve Griffiths, has been the only member to remain in the line up thoughout it's history. Read more on Last.fm
Deep Fur recorded 6 D,I.Y demos and played various gigs with Sam behind the kit before he was replaced by Damian Tasker in February 2011. The first gig was the Tallington Ashes Festival 2004, organised by Blyth Power.

Deep Fur used Eastfield's amps and the "stage" was in front of the bar's entrance, so people had to wander through the band as they played, to get drinks and then leave with them. There were also 2 successful gigs at the 12 Bar club Denmark St, in 2006 which were the first that John's long time friend, and then work colleague Gaye Advert attended. Gigs were sporadic with the band concentrating on creating songs and basically learning to play. Another live highlight was being introduced by local hero and celebrated author Robert Rankin, when playing a benefit gig for Hounslow Animal Welfare Society in 2008. What about the music ?, well I guess you could say it varies a lot with Alex generally writing more structured classic pop and psychedelic influenced songs and the Catman providing the basic & often punk sounding ones..Although sometimes this would be reversed and occasionally reggae/ska and even jazz influences would be thrown in as well.

Deep Fur does not feel the need to be confined by a genre, which is good in many ways but doesn't make them the easiest band to like. Alex writes all the lyrics, which are generally obtuse and often quite dark although he is not aversed to odd sci-fi related lyric too. All the Catman's songs all have cat related titles initially, until Alex writes some lyrics, then they lose them for something more appropriate. However involved some songs are on the demos the band live has remained a basic rocking three piece unit. Alex and the Catman both grew up in England, being heavily influenced early on by punk and alternative music, in all it's forms. The Catman moved from Marlow Buckinghamshire to London to become a Hackney squatter in the early 80's & found himself in the middle of the Anarcho Punk movement in it's heyday.

This was a bit of an eye opener but he remains to this day vegan & passionate about Animal welfare and rights and continues to attend alternative gigs regularly. The band are based in London, currently Alex resides in Lewisham, The Catman in Brentford and Damian in Harrow. Damian, it has to be said is considerably younger than the rest of the band. He spent much of his early life in France and is studying animation. Deep Fur are united in their affinity with animals, love of good music, sci-fi, horror, animation, comics, surrealism and general trivia of the sort that is bound to get you nowhere in life.

Young Damian's arrival has heralded a new lease of life for the band, a surprising number of gigs (free whenever possible) and the launch of a number of new websites. The mysterious fourth Deep Fur associate - Katy, is often mentioned as manager and sometimes as a band member but has never been seen, when the band play. There you are, Deep Fur - very nice blokes, obsessed with music & creativity, in a D.I.Y band that doesn't take itself too seriously.. check them out and contact them, if you feel that way inclined... And yes, the name is just a cat reference, nothing more interesting or sinster than that.. 10/3/11 Read more on Last.fm.
