A baby pinky mouse, he was found washed ashore tucked inside a clam shell, wearing a tiny black suit, and something around his neck akin to a mechanical watch - only faceless, and numberless. He was raised there on the beach, in a cozy cave, by a well dressed land-fish couple. Mister and Misses Fishes taught young Darius all about ham radios and egg televisions.

Beneath the waxing moon, they shared lovely evenings together, humming old fish songs and riding skybicycles high above the clouds. Sadly, one day Mister and Misses Fishes were devoured by a pair of pelicans. So young Darius set out over the mountainside in search of a new home. Yet, it was not home he found, but the Monorails.

He got a job on a magnetic handcar with a pair of run down robots, who taught him how to whistle the binary blues. There, he met multitudes of strange folk passing hither and thither. Oh, the stories he was told! When the Great Change swept over the lands, he escaped doom inside a geigenwerk. As the instrument was passed down for centuries, by a legion of talented hands, he lived, hidden within - meditating upon the sounds of the strings and spinning gears.

One bright morning, merely a few hundred years ago, the thing around his neck, which was much like a mechanical watch but not, began to thrive.
