Danimals

“With roots in pop, r&b and atmospheric electronica (think Stereolab and Prefuse 73), Danimals are as fun as they are interesting.” Online Guru Danimals send reverb-soaked, summery vocals, layered and looped over and over, with strong groove rhythms and playful accents of quirky R&B pop. Initially they hold your attention because of their charm, but the longer you listen, the more the nuanced, developed production shines through. Danimals began, largely, as a solo project for Sydney artist Jonti Danilewitz. Read more on Last.fm

Initially they hold your attention because of their charm, but the longer you listen, the more the nuanced, developed production shines through. Danimals began, largely, as a solo project for Sydney artist Jonti Danilewitz. But as time moved on it wasn't long before Danimals turned into a five-piece, transcending far beyond Jonti's original concept.

With the intentions that the shows (and music in general) have an exciting rhythmic element, the band revolves around three drummers that rotate around a single drum kit and separate synth and percussion stations. To that end, the initial line-up included some of Sydney’s premier drummers in Julien Sudek (Mercy Arms), Will Russell (Sherlocks Daughter) and Moses Macrae (Phrase), while Jaie Gonzalez (I Like Cats) later joined on bass/sampler and engineering duties. As a product of experimentation in indie music, particularly the fusion of rock and electronic sounds, Danimals takes a focus on rhythms and the deconstruction of traditional song structures to create some bouncy tripped out experimental music. While still in its infancy, the band has landed support slots for international acts like Metronomy, Why? and Patrick Wolf.

Their first album, entitled 'Twirligig', a collection of Jonti's solo recordings that are loosely based on the films of Norman McLaren, was never intended to come out. But come out it will in 2010 on Speak n Spell. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
