Dan Smith Music
Dan Smith Music
That being said, in a packed pub somewhere in North London - when you're surrounded by an audience full of un-expectant people all with their jaws to the floor as the unknown man behind the keyboard layers and plays out his compositions with the force of a full band in his hands - it would be unfair to draw too much of a comparison on already established artists. Dan Smith is not only an excellent songwriter and a thoughtfully explosive live performer - he is an outstanding addition to Future Music's alternative scene. Delivering such poetic and provocative music at such an early stage in his career, he will provide you a welcome reminder as to “what it’s all about.” A star is born.” Full Biography: 21 year old Dan Smith is something of a modern day revelation. An everyday young man devoid of arrogance and pretension, yet with a passionately-honed raw talent that would have the purveyors of today's 'mockney' singer-songwriting acknowledging that their time in the spotlight may well be up. Having started his journey into the musical foray at the age of 6 with his first lessons on the piano, Dan delved further into the world of instruments.
Picking up the violin and arranging vocal coaching, he was soon a self confessed 'music-geek' performing in just about every orchestra and choir available. However, embarrassed by his self belief of a lack of proficiency he stopped performing and ceased practising. This move served only to compound his notion that he was never going to be anything other than a bedroom artist. It wasn't until the age of 16 that music came back into the forefront. More mature and slightly more confident, Dan started writing and recording at his home in Wimbledon.
This continued all the way through to university, where the standard mixture of drink and a lack of money would lead him to gain enough courage to play his first open mic nights. Now two years on Dan Smith has truly become something of a cult hero. Garnering fans wherever he plays, this young songsmith arrives at gigs equipped with a keyboard, loop pedal and a host of other instruments including a kazoo. To see the performance live is the only way to believe it. With a perfectly played pop voice that sways into an operatic crescendo with a shocking amount of ease, he uses hand claps and beat boxing in conjunction with opposing key melodies to create a truly remarkable ensemble of sounds. Drawing obvious comparisons with Owen Pallett, Patrick Wolf and more recently Jeremy Warmsley, Dan has taken the live circuit by storm.
Winning the Leeds' Bright Young Things competition and having already played such prestigious venues as Madame Jojo's and The 100 Club, he has also been found supporting the likes of Frank Turner and Kid Harpoon. All has helped to see his popularity sky rocket. Now with video's being made, more tracks being recorded, internet blogs fawning at his feet and a full band waiting in the wings to add to the already breathtaking live spectacle. Dan looks set to build on these early ripples and, as with his performances, make crashing waves of noise that will be difficult to ignore. As soon as you witness Dan Smith it will become clear that it is not that he has a name that is easy to remember.
It is that he has a talent and a sound that is impossible to forget. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
