Also a capable viola and saxophone player, Veal studied music at the University of Southern California, where his teachers included Jascha Heifetz. Among many other credits, Veal performed with the Bolshoi Ballet in their American debut, and has worked numerous times with the Oscar and Grammy Awards ceremonies orchestras.

In 1980, he recorded his first vocal album, Only the Best, and followed it a year later with Believe It, both of which showcased his higher-register voice on sets of smooth contemporary R&B. Additionally, from the mid-'70s to the present day, Veal has maintained a career as a session musician, string arranger, and orchestra leader for a variety of R&B, jazz fusion, gospel, pop, and hip-hop artists.
