Sometimes you will hear a 8/8 timing section become a 6/6 instead in the middle of the riff. Tempo changes and timing changes are common. Keyboards are a mix of choirs, epic synths and orchestra hits. The riffs are very syncopated, something that most black metal lacks.
The accoustic sections are also very placid, something different for blck metal. The theme of Celestial Midwinter is Outer Space. It is a subject that fascinates Zakk Asshole. Most of the music written by him for this project is instrumental only, minus the first cd.
Celestial midwinter stuff is made with special multi-instrument samples ran through a reverb in Modplug tracker. Such samples include ones for each kind of drum used (hihats, bass, snares) and sometimes multiples for each. Each sample includes A) One guitar style, notes or mutes, depending on the drum - bass drums have mutes because in metal mutes go with bass drums. Snares have notes overlayed over this and so do bass drums..
Keyboard harmonies are overlayed over this. Some samples have orchestra hits instead of the normal strings used for keyboards. Extra keyboard samples are used for Accoustic sections and keyboard passages and they are all configured for easy music playing. By playing a drum beat, Zakk Asshole can play a melody at the same time.
Several options are available for note choices in the middle of the beat, a keyboard intensive one, an orchestra hit one, a snare - note one, and a bass/kick - mute one (several of those actually).
