Black Landlord

Black Landlord is an exceptional new and unique sound in Hip-Hop today. It combines all the elements of an old Motown review with classic old-school Hip-Hop. Straight outta Philly, Black Landlord is set on collectin’ the rent. The motto -- “Rent is due on the 1st not the 5th, bitches.” The founder, Maxx, was a member and lead rapper of The Goats (Ruff House Records; Cypress Hill, The Fugees, Kriss Kross) where he became musically politically motivated and helped write their groundbreaking LP, Tricks of the Shade.

After The Goats broke up in 1997 Maxx formed Incognegro with Dj Smoove and Mark Boyce, both of the Goats. After releasing one self-titled album, the group went on the road where Maxx met French electro producers Olaf Hund and Léonard de Léonard, and begun Maxx’s solo career. Maxx then moved to Berlin, Germany (far from his hometown roots in North Philly), and began working on his solo album with Olaf and Leonard de Leonard. After the album was completed he left Berlin and moved back to Philly, album in hand. He then took these electro hip-hop tracks and began working with a few friends.

They took these tracks and began to re-work them into what is now Black Landlord. These friends are made up of local musicians whom Maxx had worked with or partied with in some way, shape or form. Drummer Bob Bannon (Psyclone Rangers, Betty White Trash) and bass player Bruce Russell Rekon of Buffalo, NY (The Goats, Delta 72, Incognegro, Strapping Fieldhands) were among the first people Maxx called. After laying down the basics, he then called in horn players Michael Tramontana (After Dinner Mints, Sugar Skulls, Do you need the service?) and Kenneth Brune.

The hornplay is what makes Black Landlord something special. The final touches were guitar player Adam Campos of Puerto Rico, percussion player Mark Soulstien and back-up vocalist Al Tango of South Philly (The Goats, Pudatuda; he and Maxx went to college together at Lock Haven University). Trumpet Player Henning Thomas was delivered from Germany to help round out the horn section. Mark Boyce (The Goats, G-love) smoothed it all out by re-recording keyboards on Black Landlord’s first release, Munf ta Munf Lease.

Working together they turned the electro hip-hop tracks into something much more organic. Inspired by the funk and soul of Motown and Stacks recording artists, Black Landlord is all about makin’ ya move. Their live shows are filled with the energy of a back yard BBQ or North Philly Block party. Set to release their debut album on the Ropeadope record label, Black Landlord is, at the end of the day, a bunch of friends playing music that makes them happy.

Oh yeah… and collecting the f’n rent! Don’t be late bitches! Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply..
