Big Black Nothing

Born of boredom in a Tennessee apartment complex, Big Black Nothing is the brainchild of 19-year-old MTSU Recording Industry Management student James Zimmerman. Zimmerman began audio engineering alongside his brother in 2000 under the alias "Soul Toxin". The band composed six records of the most terrible crap you'd ever have heard if they played it for you, plus two records of only dubious suckitude. The albums were called (and I shit you not): "That Crap You Kids Listen To", "Spider Stance", "Nuclear C.A.N.O.E.", "KarateKungFuChopSueyChineseCheckers", "Digital Forehead", "Chaos Engine", "Disorder", and "Permanent Point". None was ever even released online. However, by Permanent Point, the songwriting had become somewhat developed given the Zimmermans' increasing study of engineering techniques and music theory, plus the sheer volume of practice eight albums give you.

And as goofy experimentation became concerted efforts, it was clear that the brothers each wanted to take the music in a different direction. With little hostility, Soul Toxin was "disbanded" (as it were). James' brother, a drummer, began work with "real" performing bands as a drummer, singer, songwriter, and chief engineer... as well as composing electronic music under the alias "ADSFM" (sometimes typeset "Adius Femm" to reflect its pronunciation). Meanwhile, James set about his music under the performing name "Void". Void actually completed one album, entitled "Push", which is floating about the internet.

It was never truly released, however, because of several uncleared samples and the fact that James didn't like it that much. After a rather positive response based on free release, however, and being exposed to online distribution methods for unsigned artists, James decided the next Void record should be made available on iTunes. Halfway through the recording process, however, he actually CHECKED iTunes to find a startling multitude of bands with the same name. His cousin made a joke that the reason for this was that Void was a "stereotypical name for those sort of bands; just any kind of Big-Black-Nothing sort of thing". Zimmerman liked the name and, after discovering that no other bands had this alias, decided to stick with it. At this time, Big Black Nothing is very nearly finished with its first album, "Afraid of Sleep".

The name of the album (and the title track) is a reference to a six-month period during the composition of the album during which Zimmerman grappled with chronic insomnia. Musically, the record is a mish-mash of Industrial Rock, Coldwave, Nu-Metal, Rapcore, and the occasional sprinkle of Folk/Americana and Classical. Read more on Last.fm.
