Big Al had worked for years with Henry and Vernell. He picked up the harmonica when he was a small boy living on a large sharecropper plantation in Mississippi. When he heard Sonny Boy Williamson on the radio, he started to play the blues.

On the plantation he heard many of the great blues musicians of that time, both live and on records, and he played with some of them, notably Eddie Cusik.
