Originally from Berlin (west), where she learned to play first blues, then jazz at jam sessions and from local musicians, she studied jazz guitar at the Hochschule für Musik/Köln (Cologne) from 1992-98. She participated in international jazz workshops, as the Siena Jazz Seminar/Siena/Italy (1996) w. Enrico Rava and the Banff Centre for the Arts Jazzworkshop/Canada (1998) w. David Liebman, Kenny Werner, Kenny Wheeler and John Stowell. As a very versatile musician, she has been playing in various contexts such as bebop, modern jazz, blues, funk, fusion, latin, and sometimes experimental and free music.

This is how she got to play as a sideman with musicians like John Tchicai, Helmut Brandt Mainstream Orchestra, Schäl Sick Brass Band, Berlin Big Band, Christof Griese’Affinities, Tobias Schmidt-Relenberg, Joachim Gies, Silke Eberhard and also accompanying singers like Hattie St. John, Karen Gallinger and Elisabeth Tuchmann. She has been working as a theatre musician (Saarlaendisches Staatstheater/Saarbruck) and accompanying readings of different authors and topics. in 2001, she performed with the Georg Pfister Quartet at the Theatre Festival in Avignon/France. In 2002/03 she travelled to Dakar/Senegal, where she played in clubs with musicians from Berlin and Dakar and has been leading a jazz workshop at the Ècole Nationale Des Arts. Being also active as a bandleader and composer for many years, her own music is somewhere between all those styles mentioned above. In 2004, she won the Studio Contest of the Berliner Senat in an experimental duo with tubist Pauline Boeykens, playing music to the writings of Gertrud Stein. With her own groups (“Vitamin B3” and “Berlin Spirits”), she played at festivals around Germany and in 2005 was invited by the Goethe-Institut to play at the international “Festival des Instruments a Cordes” in Marokko. 2007 Australia-Tour with guitarist Peter O'Mara She has released two CDs as a leader ("Vitamin B3", 2001/yvp-music, "Berlin Spirits" 2005/minormusic) and played on Helmut Brandt's last CD "The Final Session". Barbara has also for many years been active as a teacher for jazz guitar and as a workshop leader at various schools around Germany. She has recently moved to Munich and is currently teasching at the MGI (Munich Guitar Institute). Read more on Last.fm.
