Almir Côrtes was born in Santo Antonio de Jesus, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. He is a musician, as well as an academic researcher in the field of Brazilian instrumental music. He plays genres that are considered “traditional” or “regional” (choro, frevo, baião, etc), but with a contemporary approach that includes experimentation and improvisation. Almir Côrtes was born in Santo Antonio de Jesus, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. He is a musician, as well as an academic researcher in the field of Brazilian instrumental music. He plays genres that are considered “traditional” or “regional” (choro, frevo, baião, etc), but with a contemporary approach that includes experimentation and improvisation. Almir acts as a multi-instrumentalist of fingered strings (mandolin, guitar, electric guitar, cavaquinho and viola caipira). He has an undergraduate diploma in classical guitar from UFBA (Federal University of Bahia).

He also has a Master’s degree in music, and at present is working on a Ph.D. in popular music performance at UNICAMP (State University of Campinas). In 2005, his composition Freveando was awarded the Best Instrumental Music prize at the III Festival de Música Educadora FM in Bahia. He has played professionally and given workshops allover Brazil, United States (Berklee College of Music) and in Europe (Italy, France and Spain). He has recorded two CDs, “Almir Côrtes” (Fábrica Discos, 2006) and “Choro da Voz” (Gravina Música, 2008, in partnership with the singer Bel Dias). Among other places, He hás performed at the XIV Festival de Música Instrumental da Bahia, Zero Hour Tango Fest, III Encontro de Cordas da Mantiqueira, VI Prêmio Nabor Pires Camargo, I Festival de Inverno de Jaguariúna and the Mostra de Música Instrumental do Sesc Campinas.

He also organized the V Encontro Nacional de Choro da Unicamp in April 2009. During his career Almir has played with musicians such as Armandinho Macêdo, Izaías Bueno, Israel Bueno, Tinoco, Jorge Cardoso, Ivan Vilela, Reco do Bandolim, Paulo Freire, Ná Ozetti, Suzana Salles and Ana Luiza. At present he is a visiting scholar at the Jazz Studies Department at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Almir Côrtes nasceu no Recôncavo Baiano, na cidade de Santo Antônio de Jesus. Desenvolve um trabalho artístitico e de pesquisa sobre a música instrumental brasileira.

Trabalha com gêneros considerados “tradicionais”, ou “regionais” (choro, frevo, baião, música caipira, etc), porém, numa perspectiva contemporânea, com abertura para experimentação e improvisação. Atua como multi-instrumentista de cordas dedilhadas (bandolim, guitarra, violão, cavaquinho e viola caipira). É Graduado em violão pela UFBA, mestre e doutorando pela UNICAMP. Além de seu trabalho solo, é integrante da Orquestra Filarmônica de Violas de Campinas. Em 2005, Conquistou o prêmio de melhor música instrumental no III Festival de Música Educadora FM / Bahia, com a composição Freveando. Dentre concertos e oficinas apresentou-se no Brasil (Bahia, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais e São Paulo), United States (Berklee College of Music) e na Europa (Itália, França e Espanha).

Possui dois CDs lançados, “Almir Côrtes” (Fábrica Discos), 2006 e “Choro da Voz” (Gravina Música), 2008 (Duo com a cantora Bel Dias). Entre suas apresentações de maior destaque estão o XIV Festival de Música Instrumental da Bahia, Zero Hour Tango Fest, III Encontro de Cordas da Mantiqueira, VI Prêmio Nabor Pires Camargo, I Festival de Inverno de Jaguariúna e a Mostra de Música Instrumental do Sesc Campinas. Em 2009, organizou do V Encontro Nacional de Choro da Unicamp. Ao longo de sua trajetória, dividiu o palco com artistas como Armandinho Macêdo, Izaías Bueno, Israel Bueno, Tinoco, Jorge Cardoso, Ivan Vilela, Reco do Bandolim, Paulo Freire, Rafael dos Santos, Ná Ozetti, Suzana Salles e Ana Luiza.
