The Afro-American Chamber Music Society (AACMS) was founded in 1987 by Professor Janise White, Professor Valencia Mitchell, Hollywood Bowl Violist, Robin Ross and the late violist, Patrick Morgan, who named the organization. The Afro-American Chamber Music Society (AACMS) was founded in 1987 by Professor Janise White, Professor Valencia Mitchell, Hollywood Bowl Violist, Robin Ross and the late violist, Patrick Morgan, who named the organization. AACMS' mission to preserve black symphonists' repertoire is achieved through live performances held at Southern California's historical gothic cathedral, Wilshire United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Since its inception, AACMS has premiered and revived over 200 works by black symphonists through archival research dating from the 17th century to the present. Additionally, AACMS has performed for the Brody Arts Festival, International Black Artists In View Festival, National Association of Negro Musicians Conferences in Virginia and Atlanta, William Grant Still Anniversary Celebrations, Africa Meets North America UCLA Festival and Symposium and the Medici Awards.

Since 1988, AACMS has concertized live over KUSC Classical Radio Station for Sundays at Four and Sundays at Six; along with broadcasts and interviews over KPFK with Dr. Jeannie Pool; KPFK with Barbara Sherrill and John Patton; KCSN with Martin Perlich and KPCC with Kittie Feldie. The orchestra has been featured in articles by the Los Angeles Times, Black Music Journal, AfriClassical and UCLA Pan African Studies Newsletter with International dissemination. AACMS is listed in The Bibliography of Black Composers by Dr.

Rene DeLerma and the International Dictionary of Black Composers by Samuel Floyd Jr, Most recent performances include: UCLA Africa Meets North America Festival Concert, UCLA Schoenberg Hall, October 2009; Dance Theatre of Harlem, USC Bovard Auditorium, February 2010 and the World Premiere of Howlett Smith's "Glory Hallelujah Piano Concerto", Wilshire United Methodist Church, June 2010.
