Listen to the African Dope Soundsystem album The African Dope Soundsystem is more than an artist album, more than a compilation; it’s a tight collaboration between Cape Town DJ’s, MC’s, live and electronic musicians, studio producers and video artists, who have integrated into a powerful recording unit and live performance crew. Every member of the Soundsystem is at the top of their respective field in the Cape Town music industry, making the African Dope Soundsystem an ALL-STAR line-up of Cape Town music. All seven MCss are well established names to Gugulethu and Mitchells Plain ragga audiences and many have worked with international outfits, some have even relocated to Europe. It started as an idea by in-house African Dope producer DJ Dope to invite Cape Town’s top reggae/dancehall mcs and vocalists to drop some vocals onto his growing library of instrumental dub-based recordings, with a vague view towards a compilation release showcasing a nuskool SA ragga-dub sound. The mammoth 9 month recording session resulted in 2003's African Dope Soundsystem album on African Dope Records. Personnel includes: DJ Dope (aka Fletcher of ]Krushed & Sorted), Juan Thyme (maverick English guitarist/producer), The Chronic Clan (3 member Gugulethu vocal crew), Ras Teba (notorious vocalist/bass player ex-Skeem), Red Lion (African Dope’s ragga-master), Black Dillinger (top Gugulethu toaster), JJ (16 year old ladykiller rapper), Tim Parr (legendary SA guitar-hero), VJ Blink (Krushed & Sorted video artist and music-video maker) and Mzwakhe Ciesko (top CT session keyboardist) The sound is a fresh hybrid of local and international styles, ranging from dub reggae through to electronic dancehall – a full blend of cutting edge electronic beats and reggae-pop sensibilities, with all songs featuring strong original African vocals, tight beats, skilled acoustic musicians, electronic soundscapes and the deadly sub-bass riddims which have become the label’s forte.

The rich (but little publicised) dancehall movement of Cape Town’s townships meets the state-of-the-art bass-heavy production for which African Dope is notorious; a new sound which represents the unique cultural fermentation brewing in Cape Town.
