A Fresh New Something

A Fresh New Someting is a small electro/acoustic band formed in 2010, and run by two dudes, Jaron Johnson and Austin "Dickson" Dickson. AFNS was formed in New Concord, Ohio by these two in a word processing class at the local high school. Both of them being shy and awkward, their friendship wouldn't have existed if Dickson hadn't seen Jaron writing lyrics one day. Without a word, Dickson slid a notebook in which he'd been writing over to Jaron, who simply sat down his pen, and began reading.

The two then agreed that they should attempt to make some form of music together, and began discussion various artists they enjoyed, until they agreed that electronic was they way for them to go. Having over 100 songs between the two of them, the next step was to write the music. Jaron began doing this in a spare room in his house, which he refers to as "The Loft." In the loft, you'll most often find Jaron sitting alone in the dark, a plate of microwavable flood nearby, and a mini-refrigerator within reach, stocked with drinks. Their first EP, "Advent", is set to release sometime this summer. Their sound is a mixture of acoustic, soft, warm piano, and various uppity synth sounds. The lyrics are mostly straightforward, and cover the hottest topic on a high-schooler's mind: Relationships. Ending, beginning, enjoying, regretting, they've written it all.

Along with the synth and piano, they use autotune; not because they can't sing, but because the effect seems to pull everything together so fully. Though amateur and on a zero-dollar budget, their sound sounds like that of an indie band that has been working for several years. Read more on Last.fm.
